Description

Shane Berry first came to our attention with a string of deadly releases for Trapez LTD produced during his time in Tokyo seven years ago. Now based in Belgrade, he’s followed up recent remixes of Arthur Oskan on TLM071 with his first full-fledged EP for Thoughtless: Akaforme.

Dealing in abstract techno that’s anything but indirect, Akaforte kicks off with a seductively throbbing low end before gradually escalating with rolling chord patterns, syncopated halftime percussion, and drawn out leads that pull inexorably toward a deftly executed climax. Following a string of releases on West Norwood Cassette Library, Toronto’s Knowing Looks delivers his second remix for Thoughtless with a deliriously off-kilter bass-heavy excursion, while the Swedish duo of Fullbarr’s Hans Berg and Klasse’s Johanna Knutsson team up for an infectiously bouncy acid house version that preserves the main theme of the original while repurposing it for early morning usage.

Akaforme shows Shane in top form: cranking the bass, turning up the heat, and adding a dash of the deliciously weird for a peak time dish that ought to satisfy even the hungriest dance floors. Vancouver underground favorite Max Ulis turns in a bass-fueled breakbeat rework that twists the acidic elements of the original into deformed percussion that never loosens its magnetic grip.

Finally, Akasorme takes an arguably more hypnotic approach than the other two originals, employing expansively dubbed percussion over top of persistent polyrhythms made all the more dynamic by Shane’s impressive use of effects. Flexing his production muscle with a powerful trilogy, Mr. Berry is back – you heard it here first…
